Mayors across America left their offices on Wednesday to deliver meals to seniors in their towns. This isn’t a part of any campaign it is just to bring awareness to the many seniors out there that are on limited income and can use food and friendship.
More than 1200 of America’s mayors participated in the project on Wednesday. This is an annual push to help Meals on Wheels with their war against senior hunger. In today’s economy everything needs to be done that can be to see that our elderly are taken care of.
The mayor for meals month long campaign that has been named March for meals actually started in Ohio when some mayors expressed an interest in delivering meals in their town. The Meals on wheels association expected to get maybe 100 mayors involved, now their 6th year they have grown to over 1300 mayors delivering meals on one day. That is remarkable in itself.
Meals on wheels operates more than 5,000 senior nutrition programs and serves over a million meals a day. Volunteers are not just there to deliver meals though. This gives the seniors the opportunity for friendship and a check on their safety every day.
The mayors of America hope that what they are doing will bring awareness to the rest of America that our elderly are still out there and hope that some of them may even volunteer to help.
It seems to be working as the Wal-mart foundation announced on Wednesday that it would be giving Meals on Wheels a 5 million dollar grant to help with feeding Americas seniors.
