If you don’t drink alcohol and are looking for a fun way to celebrate the start of the new year, then how about smashing a few bananas. Yep, bananas. A group of people are starting a fun new tradition of squishing away the frustrations of the old year with bananas.
John Podeszwa of Miinneapolis invented this funny new idea in 1992 when he and his friends were thinking of something different to do for New Year’s Eve. They decided to write something about the old year on a banana and smash it at midnight. Each of them got a banana, wrote something from the old year and smashed it at the same time outside in the back of the house where the bananas would go to waste because an animal would be sure to find it.
Banana crazy is now getting all over the States and the world, and there was a Facebook page dedicated to it his year. It’s also safer, since no one is out shooting weapons in the air or drinking alcohol and then going out driving. As long as you watch out for the peels afterwards, the fans of this new trend say that it’s a great way to have a good time with no accidents or other issues.
So, if you want a new and fun way to celebrate New Year’s Eve and ring out the old year of 2010, then join with your friends and count down those hours, minutes and seconds until everyone can smash a few bananas into the ground. Maybe save a few for some banana bread for later too!
