Jeremy is turned 10 last week and like most kids he was pretty excited about it, but that isn’t why Jeremy is in the news. He’s making news because of exactly what he wanted to do for his birthday, rather than having a big party with his friends he is having his parents throw a party for local police officers so he can show is appreciation. For a 10 year old, Jeremey is very in tune to what’s going on in the world so he knows that there has been tension between police and the public, so he’s doing his part to show appreciation.
Young Jeremy says he came up with the idea a few months ago when police departments around the country were seeing increased violence and media coverage. He said he felt bad that so many great police officers got no recognition and nothing but constant negative feedback so he wanted to come up with something he could do to repay them. After telling his parents what he wanted to do, Jeremy and his family came up with a great way to celebrate his local police officers and hopefully make their days a little bit brighter.
The whole celebration took place in his school’s gymnasium, and it was a good thing too because officers showed up from hundreds of miles away. Obviously all police officers in his home town of Lansing Michigan were invited, but word spread and soon police officers all around the country were invited. At the party Jeremy greeted and talked to as many officers as possible, his family was also selling cookies and baked goods, all of that money was then donated to police organizations to do even more positive work for the police officers. Jeremy says he was absolutely amazed at how many police officers showed up and all of the officers were happy to report just how much it improved their days or weeks, seeing just how much a young boy cared about what they do.
All in all the party was a huge success, Jeremy was happy to spread some cheer, the officers were happy to see something positive in the world, and a lot of money was raised. At the end of the party Jeremy got his biggest birthday surprise, he was officially appointed as an honorary police officer in is home town police force.
