This week a study released by the Boston Children’s Hospital has made some pretty bold claims that have many doctors and families very excited. The study was specifically targeted towards breastfeeding in order to determine what , if any, benefits were gained as a result of breastfeeding. Well the results came in and it turns out breastfeeding can have a significant impact on intelligence in the child’s lifetime.
This is a major breakthrough for a number of reasons, for many years doctors have known that breastfeeding offers numerous benefits, but they’ve never been able to link intelligence to feeding habits. Doctors say that children that were exclusively breastfed for 6 months showed significant advantages in brain development at 7 years old and they claim that the results are statistically significant.
This is absolutely great news because it once again confirms what many doctors have been saying for years. It is only a matter of time before there are more in depth studies set up to investigate this link but for now doctors are very happy to report what they’ve found. Obviously for this reason and others most doctors are continuing to recommend breastfeeding to mothers unless there is some sort of other medical condition which may prevent it.
