No, this is not a zombie or vampire tale involving a tail-wagging pouch but a story of an unexplained and miraculous canine recovery. While playing in the family’s backyard, Scamp the terrier-Shih Tzu mix puppy made a run for it. Escaping under the fence, he ran into the street where he was hit by a car.
Reta McKinley was preparing to explain to her 6-year old twin grandchildren that their puppy has gone to heaven. When they found Scamp, he wasn’t moving. His eyes were fixed and he was bleeding. They were unable to detect any signs of him breathing. McKinley’s husband wrapped the pooch in a blanket and left him outside, tucked away under a wheelbarrow to keep other animals away.
In the morning, when her husband returned to bury the puppy, he found Scamp sitting up. While the dog’s name might imply he was a bit of a trickster, it is more likely another explanation exists for his amazing recovery. The most likely explanation for Scamp’s resurrection is that he was in shock following the accident and that he awoke sometime during the night.
Thanks to over $3000 worth of veterinary bills since then and lots of tender loving care, Scamp is home and recovering nicely. Given the amount the family has had to spend to restore Scamp to his pre-accident state of health, it is likely there won’t be many extravagances this year. That’s okay – McKinley’s grandchildren couldn’t be happier.
