Mia, a one year old Belgian Malinois, was found in the basement bathtub by the fire department after they put out the fire. The fire fighters said she seemed to know just where to hide from the fire. Her owners said they knew their dog was smart, and that she had to open four doors to get to the basement area.
The fire fighters at the scene said they found her covered in soot, dazed and wet, but otherwise unharmed. Her owners had been out to dinner when the home caught on fire. The fire fighters had been fighting the fire for more than two hours, and then spend several more hours cleaning up the area.
While cleaning up the debris, they discovered Mia in her bathtub refuge. They speculate that the bathtub became filled with water from the fire fighter’s hoses as they sprayed the home with gallons of water, which then trickled down into the basement area and filled the tub.
The fire is under investigation and the fire department says preliminary information show the fire started in the attic. The cause, however, is unknown at this time.
But whatever the cause of the fire, Mia’s owners are just happy that she is safe thanks to a basement bathtub filled with water and her ability to open doors.
