There are plenty of stories about dolphins helping to save people, but some dolphins in Marco Island, Fla. helped to save a dog trapped on a sandbar. The dog had gotten lost from his family and couldn’t get out of the water and the dolphins were trying to get someone’s attention.
The Doberman Pinscher has gotten lost from his home earlier in the day and got trapped on the sandbar. He was spotted by a woman on vacation after she heard the dolphins making all kinds of noise and swimming around the area near where the dog was trapped.
Dolphins are common in the area, but she was attracted to them because they kept splashing water against the sandbar and canal wall and she wanted to know what they were doing it for. When she went to look, she saw the dog, which was half under water. He couldn’t get back to shore due to the height of the canal wall.
The woman lowered herself into the canal in order to get to the dog and helped to get him out. She helped the dog, whose name is Turbo, get out and then helped to reunite him with his owners.
Even though the woman was the one that pulled the dog out of the canal, she credits the pair of dolphins with helping to save his life. It appears that even another species can have the compassion to want to help a poor dog in distress, so bravo dolphins!
