The Art of Elysium is a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 that is dedicated to serving children that are battling serious medical conditions. The organization encourage working artists to volunteer their time and talents to help the children battle their conditions. Elysium has ongoing workshops in creative writing, radio, music, fashion, comedy and many others. The artists of Elysium work with the kids to promote interest in the art form to help alleviate the stresses of the disease that they suffer with.
The founder, Jennifer Howell, created the organization after her close friend passed away from the Leukemia he had been battling for years. During treatment, the friend crossed paths with a youngster that was alone in his fight with cancer due to having working parents unable to leave the job. The message that no person should ever be alone battling serious disease became a mission for good works. Jennifer brought her friends and colleagues into this world of need and the mission of the Art of Elysium was born.
The Art of Elysium continues to bring singers, actors, artists and writers into the children’s hospitals to bring love and laughter to a sick child. What was once Jennifer and her friends has become a community of artists that intercede in the lives of sick children. The organization offers several programs for the children to take part in and the children get a needed respite from the rigors of treatments.
The Visual Arts Exploration is a program that allows kids to be creative. The kids get to explore many artistic mediums. Workshops are offered on collage making, masks, cartooning, jewelry, murals, sand art, sculpting and many more. The fashion Design program allows the kids the opportunity to express themselves with clothing and fashion design. The kids are lead and taught by professional fashion designers that have volunteered time to work with them. The kids develop their own sense of style and design and develop their own clothing pieces that they model in a fashion show. The Photography workshop encourages kids to share thoughts and feelings using photographic techniques. Their interests are expressed with the help of professionals and the group learns about the mechanics of photography and how images are captured and manipulated.
The Art of Elysium continues to bring singers, artists, actors and writers into children’s hospitals and pediatric care who share the idea that no child should go through medical treatment alone.
