You’re driving late at night and the endless hum of the motor combined with the warmth of the car and the fact you’ve been driving for hours equals one thing – the possibility that you will fall asleep at the wheel and cause a crash that could kill or injure you or someone else.
However, there is a new monitor system called the Eyetracker that may work to solve these kinds of issues soon. It sounds an alarm to prevent drivers from falling asleep at the wheel.
Studies have shown that sleepy drivers may be the cause of about 18 percent of all fatal car collisions. The Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology has developed a simple solution to this dangerous problem. It is a new type of camera monitor called the Eyetracker. This device watches the drivers’ eyes to monitor whether they close their eyes for longer than a normal blink. If it senses sleepiness, it sounds off an alarm that will be loud enough to make sure the driver wakes up.
The system under development, but isn’t too far from being available on the market, and should be very simple to install in any vehicle. It could be a very worthwhile investment for long-haul truckers and anyone else who spends a lot of hours driving on the road.
With the use of this new device, the Eyetracker, it’s hoped there will be less crashes due to sleep drivers.
