22 month old Tyler Jacobson was wearing only a diaper and a t-shirt when he slipped out of his house Friday night and wandered into the woods behind his home in Kershaw County in South Carolina. Luckily his family pet followed him and that is how he survived the night.
Tyler’s mother 25 year old Jacklyn Marie Jacobson and her boyfriend were watching a movie in her bedroom when Tyler went into the kitchen to get juice and wandered off. She called police around 8pm on Friday night.
A blood hound tracking team and infrared equipped search helicopters scoured the woods until 3am when the search was called off because of high winds and intense darkness. Everyone was worried because the temperatures dropped in the 40’s and Tyler was nowhere to be found.
The next morning when the search resumed a man heard Tyler crying and rescuers found him and a mid-size black Labrador retriever that had followed Tyler into the woods. He had slept with the child to keep him warm.
Kershaw County Sherriff Jim Matthews said he thinks the only reason the child is still alive was because of their family pet. A neighbor who heard the helicopters said she had no idea a child was missing and assumed someone had escaped from prison. She locked her doors and didn’t go outside.
Conditions inside the home were said to be deplorable, a nice way of saying that the home was filthy. Social services are being called in to see if there is any way to improve the situation. Tyler’s dad is in the army and stationed in Hawaii. He is now on his way home.
