Last week a homeless man, Frederick Callison, in Sacramento California decided that it was time for him to try something different. He had been homeless for nearly 2 years and despite all of his efforts he had been unsuccessful in his search to find a job. The new approach he tried was simple, rather than asking for money he started handing out resumes to anyone that was willing to take one. A lot of people thought he was crazy, but in a matter of days he had scored and interview that has now turned into a job.
Callison says now that even he initially thought it was going to be a nearly impossible task but he still went forward with the plan. It cost him some money up front to get the resumes printed but now that he’s got a job he knows that it was abosltuely the right choice. Callison says he was once a skilled line cook, so he kept proof of previous employment with him, as well as his food handling certification, and his social security card. All of that paid off when Michael Marteen walked by and saw the man. Marteen was a former catering company owner and he was so touched by Callison’s story that he took the resume and sent out some info to his friends and coworkers in the industry. In a matter of hours Marteen said he got positive responses and that’s when he knew he was going to be able to help Callison get off of the street.
In just a few days Callison went from homeless and desperate to employed. A local pizza restaurant picked him up as a cook where he is now working to get back on his feet. He’s even hoping to become roommates with one of his coworkers so he will soon have a permanent residence. Overall this is just an incredibly heartwarming story. Thanks to some quick thinking Callison was able to make miracles happen with the assistance of one kind stranger. One he is successfully back on his feet Callison says he plans to volunteer at food banks and homeless shelters so that he can help others like him move forward in life too. It just goes to show that all it takes is one friendly stranger to completely change someone’s life, even something small and simple can really make a big difference.
