Housing Minister Phil Heatley said “Housing New Zealand will work directly with the people of Canterbury to help match them to the best and most suitable housing that is available for them.”
Anyone desiring housing can go to the Housing New Zealand website, or they can call the HELP line at (0800 HELP 00), or visit the welfare centres in Christchurch to offer housing for the needy or to look for temporary housing.
Heatley said that they had already gotten some very remarkable offers of housing assistance from people all over New Zealand and even from overseas. “We have gotten more than 1,000 calls since the earthquake, most of which are to offer help.”
He added that even the Housing New Zealand’s staff has been letting people who need help stay in their homes.
Housing New Zealand will also be calling other agencies and private businesses to help with accommodations and to co-ordinate incoming offers.
Heatley said that a database of landlords and housing offers was being planned to use during the repair and redevelopment efforts after the previous September quake.
