The program is sponsored by a local community outreach program called Rebuilding Together-Houston. The program helps seniors, individuals with disabilities, veterans, and people impacted by natural disasters repair their homes. It was co-founded by actor Morgan Freeman. This is the largest group in the country doing free home repairs for the elderly.
Federal grants helped to provide funds for the renovations. Other organizations such as the Sagemont Church and the Helping Hands organization also provided assistance. But, the bulk of the work was done by the students.
Students spent their days in Texas’ famous summer heat renovating homes instead of kicking back at the local beaches. They power-washed, scraped and painted the outside of homes. Long neglected landscaping was also given a thorough make-over. Brush was so thick in one back yard that regular garden tools wouldn’t touch it. Students had to learn how to use chainsaws and vine cutters. At one home the students had to completely demolish a detached garage. The students are already planning to come back next spring to rebuild it. This is not work for the lazy or faint of heart.
