Mr Guarente is a junk collector. He’s found all kinds of things in his time: gold coins, watches, etc. But one day, he came across an envelope containing savings bonds from the 1970’s.
Now some people might assume that at more than 30 years old, it wouldn’t really amount to much value-wise. But check this: those bonds were worth a cool $114,000.
Yes. $114,000.
Not only that, Guarente went looking for the owner, found her next of kin (Joe and Marie Veloso) and returned every single penny. “I almost fell backwards”, Marie said. “Good thing my brother was there. I was in shock.”
Apparently, as a junkman, legally he can keep whatever he finds. Though he would have been with his (legal) right to do that, one can’t argue with a good heart. He returned them.
Guarente mentioned that with the economy being the challenge that it is, it felt good to return the bonds.
Joe said, “It renews our faith in humanity and honest people out there.”
