This is the second of these weekends that honors military injured and severely wounded in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sinise has been honoring military and first responders ever since he appeared in the Forrest Gump movie.
The concert is a benefit for these brave men and women, and volunteers have already raised enough money so that the 65 military members and their families and care givers attending the event could be there and get away from their problems for a short while. The Lt. Dan Weekend was thought up by Steve “Luker” Danyluk, the creator of the Independence Fund, which also supports those who have been severely hurt in wartime. Danyuluk is a Marine vet and has also served in Iraq.
In the past two years, the Lt. Dan Weekend has raised more than $1.5 million dollars. This year it features not only the concert, but also a golf tourney, bike ride, art exhibits on war and films, and more. It is all run entirely with volunteers with all proceeds going to the injured vets.
Sinise also goes to visit the wounded military veterans in hospitals despite the fact that it can be hard to handle the meetings. Sinise says that despite the apprehension before he gets to the hospital, that in the long run you just have to think about the injured soldiers and then you forget about yourself. He added that they are always happy to see him.
