In October 2010, Jerry Pope decided to send out a message in a bottle. He’d always heard how people usually found little treasures in the sea, so he thought why not – he’d send one out himself. He hoped someone would find it and reply, but then you never know – it’s always a chance, isn’t it? Plus if it was found, who’s to say the person who found it would indeed reply.
Anyway, so he tossed the bottle into the sea (Niantic, Connecticut), leaving his contact details, hoping it would get somewhere, to a person, and the person would write back.
And guess what? Someone did! 4000 miles away! On March 22nd. From an island off an English coast.
What are the chances really? A whole manner of things could have happened to that bottle – it could have been smashed against a rock, swallowed by a whale or destroyed by a ship propeller. But none of that happened. Instead, someone off the English coast found it. Not only found it, but took the time to reply with a postcard.
Jerry plans to do the same thing again. Who knows where it will go this time
