Police Lt. Wade Sharp and his daughter were staying at a local campsite when the storm hit the area. The tornado came with no warning and ripped through the campsite and came towards the pair. The force of the storm broke off a tree and hurled it towards his daughter. Sharp immediately jumped on top of her and shielded her from the tree. His quick actions saved his daughter’s life, but he was killed when the tree struck him while he was protecting his child.
His boss, Chief of Police Richard Palmisano wasn’t surprised, and said that everyone wanted to work with him and that he never heard anyone ever say a bad word against him. Sharp had been on the police force for 19 years, and is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
Sharp had saved lives before, and previously received the Medal of Valor for his heroic actions in risking his life to enter a burning home to rescue a man overcome by smoke.
This time, however, it was the time honored instinct common to all parents, which is the instinct to protect your own children that spurred him into action. He made the ultimate sacrifice in order to save his daughter. There’s nothing more heroic that a dad can do.
