Kivisto says that she is in shock after getting that report from a detective a few days ago.
You see, her mother, Lula Hood, ran off in 1970 after a family argument and left behind her 14 children. Hood was suffering from mental health problems and it wasn’t the first time she had left after a fight, she had always came back all the other times, and that time she was never seen by the family again.
Then, in 1996 police found human remains in a Galesburg brickyard and told the family the remains were those of their mother, Lula. So, the family mourned and buried the remains, believing that to be true.
Then, by 2009 the family provided DNA samples to investigators because they wanted to be sure that the body they had buried more than 10 years prior was really their mother. It turned out that they were not and the family was put into shock! Police opened up the investigation into Lula’s disappearance back in 1970 and started trying to find out what had happened to the missing mom.
By last week, the police matched a name and date of birth to a now 84 year old women in Florida whom they say is the long missing mother of 14 – Lula. When Kivisto heard the news she was overjoyed and says she is going down to Florida to reunite with her mother.
It was unsure how the reunion would go, but Kivisto is very happy indeed to know that her mother, missing since 1970, is alive and well in Florida.
