In the most dramatic food suggestion change of the past 20 years the U.S. Department of Agriculture changed the suggested food diagram from its iconic pyramid shape. The new food suggestion chart is actually round and is meant to somewhat mimic a dinner plate shape rather than a pyramid.
The idea came about after nutrition analysts reported that the pyramid shape simply wasn’t effective. As a result researchers tested various theories and eventually decided that a circular or plate shaped design was best because it can visually show people what to eat based on plate size.
Just as before there are categories that each food type is grouped in but according to most nutirional experts this new design should be much more effective. Rather than simply indicating a number of daily servings the new design is focused on the relationship between each of the so-called food groups.
As always the purpose behind the food suggestion system is to educate and demonstrate healthy meal ideas for people from all across the United States. Government officials and health experts alike are hopeful that this guide will make it easier for people to decide if they are in fact eating healthy and many believe that it could actually be a great step forward in the fight against obesity. Just as before the food guidelines will be taught in schools as well so it could be a step in the right direction for fighting child obesity as well.
