In 1995, Patrick Ivison was only 14 months old when he was involved in an unfortunate accident — a car reversed into him, leaving him with serious injuries including paralysis from his waist down.
“It happened in an instant, the car backed up suddenly and it clipped him, knocked him down,” said his mother.
Being paralysed didn’t break his spirit though. Growing up, he took up various sports including rugby, kayaking and competitive surfing. Not only that, in 2009, he vowed to do whatever it took to walk at his 2012 high school graduation. And, a young man of his word, he did exactly that this month!
With some support, he did it – he got up from his wheelchair, determined, and walked the distance to go get his diploma, everybody supporting him all the way, on their feet, clapping and cheering for him all the way as if Patrick had scored a slam dunk. And he had! A very personal slam dunk.
One of the newscasters end the report by saying, “he’s gonna do whatever it is that he wants to do. He’s that kind of individual.”
She’s not wrong there.
