The Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support Group said on Monday that all of the people and the cats on the island were safe, but short of food and supplies. Rescue groups are even now trying to figure out a way to get food to the island, but debris in the water are making boat travel nearly impossible.
The army is looking into the possibility of bringing the island residents food and supplies via helicopter and the animal rescue group is going to ask them to take cat food for the animals as well.
The cats are thought to bring good luck, and the residents there have even built a shrine to them. The cats attract tourists, and they are considered a lucky charm for catching a lot of fish and are very important to the residents. Feeding them is supposed to bring good luck.
Three animal rescue organizations make up the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue group. The three are Heart Tokushima, Animal Friends Niigata, and the Japan Cat Network, as well as WorldVets.
They are dedicated to promoting the rescue and adoption of lost and stray animals and want to help as many animals as they can out of the tragic disaster areas.
Many pets were left abandoned and now have no way to get food, so they are trying their best to help.
