However, a Scottish charity called REAP has come up with a way that is both inexpensive and helps to keep plastic out of landfills and helps the environment in the process. It is a project that anyone can do because the basic design can be adapted to make a greenhouse as small as a pint sized frame clear up to a large sun room.
All you need are a little bit of lumber, a few bamboo canes and about 1,000 two liter plastic drink bottles (which would have gone into a landfill) and you can build many different designs. If you don’t need to build something huge, you need far less plastic bottles, but this is what is needed to build a large greenhouse.
In response, many schools across the UK built some greenhouses because the kids were concerned about the environment. They also needed something to sow seeds for the school vegetable plots and these greenhouses did the job perfectly.
For example, one of the participating schools was Freemantle School. They collected more than 1,700 bottles and built a bicycle shelter out of it. This shows that you can even modify the designs to make other structures.
Through area workshops, other buildings that have been designed using plastic bottles have been bus shelters and playground screens to help shield students from the weather.
