Just last week a police K9 in Norfolk, VA was shot and killed during a police standoff. The K9 was used to help capture a man that had barricaded himself in the house, but unfortunately things did not go well for the K9. The good news is that the story had an overwhelmingly positive result in the aftermath. Shortly after the new broke multiple charity groups set up funds to help take care of the rest of the K9 dogs on the force in Norfolk. The fund, named SpikesK9Fund, was created to help purchase bulletproof vests for all of the other K9 units and to prevent a tragedy like this from occurring again.
What occurred shortly after the fund was setup is truly heartwarming. The public response was overwhelming, with hundreds of people donating money almost immediately. That wasn’t all though, Anderson Cooper from CNN announced that he would be fully funding the purchase price for bulletproof vests for all of the K9s. At a price of around $2200 per vest, the investment was quite a big help to the Norfolk police department, and they’re incredibly happy to see such generosity from a celebrity like Anderson Cooper.
Cooper did not announced publicly that he was going to be making the contribution to the fund, rather he wanted to stay low key. The fund’s owner had been interviewed by Anderson Cooper in the past about his efforts to raise money to purchase bulletproof vests for K9s around the country and apparently that was enough to encourage Cooper to donate and take care of the K9 group in Norfolk.
This is another touching example of a celebrity doing the right thing and contributing to something they believe in. Not only did Anderson Cooper care enough to contribute to save the dogs, he was more interested in getting protection for the dogs than getting publicity. Once the news came out that Cooper had supported the charity things really exploded, SpikesK9Fund say they saw a huge influx of donations following Mr. Cooper’s and that they are grateful for the support and publicity that will help them achieve more of their mission.
K9s like those in Norfolk are always in the line of duty, and unfortunately they are often at higher risk than human officers. Fortunately the SpikesK9Fund has purchased thousands of vests for K9s all around the United States and they plan to continue helping police forces until every unit is equipped with vests.
