Little did he know at the time, but Ceili was trying to let him know that something was horribly wrong. He just knew he didn’t feel well and thought he had indigestion and wanted her to go away. A short time later, Fincher had a heart attack, and faithful Ceili ran barking down the hallway to try to find Dan’s wife, Gayle, to get help.
Ceili is now up for the Dog of Valor award from the Humane Society of the United States and is one of 10 finalists.
James Serpell, a professor of animal welfare at the University of Pennsylvania, says that it’s very possible the dog did know her master was about to have a heart attack, as there are dogs that have been trained to sniff out things like seizures and cancer.
Serpell added that since dogs are raised to focus themselves on people, they have a higher sensitivity as to what goes on regarding their owners.
Thanks to Ceili, Fincher is going to be fine. Her barking got Gayle’s attention and Dan was taken to the hospital and treated within 20 minutes of the heart attack.
Fincher is convinced that Ceili saved his life and is happy that she was nominated for the award and hopes she gets it.
