Working on the principle of rewards for good behavior, human motivation is highlighted with Nexercise, the free iPhone app that rewards users with free and discounted merchandise. This new app tracks activities, ranging from weightlifting to running to fencing and polo, and hopes the free goodies will keep users motivated to adopt positive exercise habits that will last a lifetime.
Emphasizing that healthy weight control is a lifestyle and not a diet, points are given not for the amount of miles run or how many pounds have been lifted, but rather for indications of healthy behavior. Points can be earned based on the length of a work-out or for other behaviors that reinforce good habits; such as, finding a way to exercise inside on a day when the weather is bad.
With Nexercise, the prizes are given to those users who have the most points, and the more points they attain, the more valuable the prizes. Rewards range from $5 dollar gift cards and coupons for things like energy bars up to cards for $250. The prize field has been expanded since early August when Nexercise joined forces with Klip, a San Francisco-based advertising company. This union has made possible prizes from retailers such as make-up company, Sephora, and GNC vitamins and supplements.
The new app is not without its problems. The quality of the rewards offered has been criticized, but it is hoped this will continue to improve. There are also technical complaints, as this app has to be open at all times and cannot run in the background of other operations. Nexercise is available worldwide on the App Store.
