Soon, the St Louis fireman would need a new kidney, but for now he was to watch his diet and wait. He managed to stay relatively healthy over the years until recently when it has gotten worse and he will need a kidney transplant. He might even die.
But, that won’t be happening because his brother, Lee, is going to give him on one of his kidneys to save his brother’s life. Lee is also a St. Louis firefighter. Both brothers are captains in the Fire Department.
Ken is 53 and Lee is 45. They were born in St. Louis, but their parents separated when they were young.
About a year ago, Lee found out that doctors had told Ken that his kidneys were shutting down and he would have to go on dialysis and also get on the transplant list. Lee was tested and was a perfect match and wanted to give his brother a kidney.
Lee quickly dismissed any idea that what he was doing was extraordinary. “It’s what you do for your big brother,” he said.
Later that week, the two underwent surgery and both brothers are doing well and should be back to work at the fire department in about a month.
