It’s not every day that the kindness of others touches our lives. It’s not every day that seasoned transportation workers go out of their way for the commuters they serve. But on this day, that’s just what happened.

In a blog entitled, “Life with Roozle”, mother Casey Carey-Brown expresses her heart felt appreciation for the workers of Boston’s MTBA who went above and beyond to save her 3 year old daughter’s stuffed animal from the path of an oncoming train.

As she and her daughter, Riley, exited the train at the Green Street station in Jamaica Plain, the child’s toy fell from the stroller and landed on the train tracks below.

The little girl’s distress was immediately apparent and in spite of her mother’s assurances that they could get another one, she insisted on having her “friend” back. Fearful that her friend would be squished by the train, Riley became even more upset.

The MTBA worker called the oncoming train and alerted it to the problem. The train stopped, allowing the worker to safely retrieve Riley’s “friend” and then the train moved on.

The next day, mother and daughter got a chance to thank Fannie Matchette, the quick-acting MTBA worker who saved Riley’s stuffed animal and thank her in person. Matchette was delighted to have made the little girl’s day.

While it may not seem like a big deal, it’s not every day that the trains get stopped for personal reasons like this. According to Carey-Brown, the workers at the MTBA that day went above and beyond and Riley is happy about it too.

Group of Workers Win Jackpot

Earlier this week the $319 million Mega Millions jackpot was won; officially at this time no one has stepped forward to claim the prize though the winners have been identified. The winning ticket was reportedly purchased by a small group of New York public workers who were facing possible pay cuts or even unemployment.

At this time the group is not publicly speaking because they are still working out details and information regarding their winnings but a lawyer contracted by the group has confirmed that the stories are in fact true. According to sources the group of 7 workers were all incredibly concerned about their future with the New York Division of Housing and Community renewal; though now obviously all of these concerns are basically gone for the group.

Due to massive budget deficits many agencies and state funded projects in New York are being forced to reduce their work force or even close down entirely. Obviously the group knows that at this time their jobs are likely still in jeopardy due to the budget issues but at this time the primary focus seems to be on the incredible prize won by the group.

No word on when the group is going to publicly step forward and claim the prize, though it will likely be within a week or two. Coworkers of the winners have all made it clear they are happy for the winning group while many of them also jokingly say they wish they had taken part in the group lottery purchase.
