When 15 year old Dustin Bush went out to fish on Saturday morning he never dreamed he would end up in a capsized boat trying to save the lives of men decades older than him. But that is what happened when they ran into rough weather and their boat capsized in choppy waters.
The 4 fishermen left in a 22-foot boat at 7am on Saturday to go fishing. That afternoon when the water started to get choppy they headed back in. They never made it. The motor on the boat failed and a 6 to 7 foot wave capsized the boat shortly after.
With the life jackets trapped under the boat 15 year old Dustin frantically started looking for anything him and his fellow fisherman could stay afloat on. He managed to get two of the men on things that kept them afloat but 55-year old Rick Green couldn’t keep his head above the water. Dustin worked frantically to save him and tread water at the same time.
Capt. Mitch Coretella was out with his crew when he spotted hats, shoes and other debris in the water. One of his crew members saw Dustin waving his hat and his neon green sunglasses. The crew member told Coretella and they headed over to pull them out.
Dustin was still trying to keep Rick Greens head above water but to no avail. The man was dead when they pulled him from the water.
Dustin Bush saved two lives Saturday. That he couldn’t save Rick Green will be something he will never forget. He was very brave in circumstances that most full grown men wouldn’t be able to handle. His heroic efforts should be a lesson to us all.
