45 year old mother and college student Su Meck is not your normal success story. She graduated last Friday from college which in itself may not be to amazing. The thing is she graduated after overcoming severe and total memory loss.
At 22-years old Su Meck was a new mother and wife and a successful Aerobics instructor living in Fort Worth Texas. As she was cooking dinner for her family one night a ceiling fan fell on her head leaving her in a coma with a brain that was full of cracks.
When Meck woke up she remembered nothing of her life from day one. Family and friends still get chills when thinking of the blank stares she gave them when they talked to her. She had no idea who they were or who she was for that matter.
Her husband Jim was quoted as saying, “It was literally like she had died. Her personality was gone.” “It was Su 2.0. She had rebooted.
Meck had to learn everything over from the beginning. She doesn’t remember her children, giving birth or any of the other milestones in her life. She just celebrated her 26th wedding anniversary and remembers nothing from her wedding day. She said that they are thinking of picking another day for their anniversary, something that she remembers.
This makes the accomplishments of Su Meck even more amazing. With the help of her family she has overcome a severe handicap. She went back to college against all odds and graduated on Friday with an associate’s degree in music with a 3.9 GPA.
Meck says she intends to register at Smith College in Massachusetts in the fall as a transfer student. She plans to go for her master’s degree in Library science.
