Ashley’s grandfather was diagnosed with cancer at the age of eighty nine and could have just sat down and spent his remaining time trying to be as comfortable as possible. He did not accept this fate and fought it daily during treatments in order to walk his granddaughter down the aisle at her wedding.
Ashley’s father had passed away from pancreatic cancer when she was nine years old and her grandfather made a promise to her to walk her down the aisle.
On the one year anniversary of her wedding, Ashley will race a half marathon to raise money for the Young Texans against Cancer in honor of her father and grandfather. Robert Blaicher spent his time being there for his granddaughters in order to help take the place of her father and he was determined to be there at her wedding.
On the day of her wedding, Blaicher feared that he would not have the strength to be there for her, but he was there with her on that day one year ago – Smith is determined to be there on race day for him and her father.
It is the thoughts of her father and grandfather that motivate her to get out and run for the cause. Smith is stretching her abilities to race in the half marathon but in the memory of her father and grandfather, she is committed to the race on the anniversary of her wedding Ashley wants to honor their memory and race in their name.
Smith’s father suffered in his fight against pancreatic cancer because of extenuating circumstances that prevented him from pursuing traditional therapy. He tried as many alternative therapies as he could to be with his family as long as possible but he lost the fight when Smith was nine years old. It is his fighting spirit and the sacrifices of her grandfather that continues to motivate Ashley as she completes her race.
It is the amazing spirit of Ashley that motivates people that read about her story to get out and push themselves to help others and to provide encouragement to others going through similar circumstances.
