There was once an old song that went something like this:
It’s illegal, it’s immoral or it makes you fat.
It really doesn’t matter what you’re aiming at.
If it’s something you enjoy you can be certain that,
Its illegal, it’s immoral, or it makes you fat.
While this little ditty has its points, nutritionists and researchers have changed their minds about foods that are bad for us, and now they say may even surprisingly cause health benefits. Some of those that made most lists included: chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and eggs. Now we need to re-examine these no-nos that are slowly slipping into the range of yes-yes.
• Eggs
Let’s start with the egg. This poor food has been in nutritional limbo over the last few decades as it has been maligned and then accepted until recent research finally ascertained that the greater culprit is saturated fats and not the cholesterol found in eggs. They are also a source of protein and iron and are fine food for everyone in moderation.
• Coffee
According to the American Medical Association, regular coffee drinkers are less likely to have type II diabetes, and caffeine may reduce the risk of developing colon cancer, liver disease, and Parkinson’s disease. Previously believed to be linked to both cancer and heart disease, caffeine no longer has this stigma.
• Chocolate
Believe it or not, chocolate is rife with minerals and has some of the same antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables that minimize the risk of heart disease. Dark chocolate is healthier than light, as it contains at least 70 percent cocoa.
• Alcohol
Over the last few years, a growing body of evidence indicates that alcohol in small amounts may actually reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. Red wine in particular is rich in antioxidants, including resveratrol, which may help prevent clogged arteries.
In conclusion, everything in moderation is the key to healthy living. A few cups of coffee is not a whole pot and one drink is not three or four.
Live a little and… live longer.
