School Superintendent Refuses Salary to Resolve Budget Problems-- Source: AssociatedPress
Larry Powell is the superintendent of the Fresno County School District in California and this week he did something that shocked everyone in the district. Powell made an astonishing announcement that will help resolve some major budget issues in the district; he gave up his salary for the entirety of his remaining years at the school district.
Powell’s current contract will expire in 2015 and he says that he will not be accepting any type of salary or pay from now until at least the end of his term. In the three years that he gave up his salary he will save the school district approximately $800,000 in pay which Powell says he simply doesn’t need or want. This incredibly generous act has surprised and shocked the entire school district and it will definitely have a big impact on the district’s budget for the next few years.
Powell says his reasoning for giving up the salary is that he simply doesn’t need it at this point in his life. Powell is planning to retire in 2015 when his current term ends and according to his latest press release he simply feels that it is more worthwhile for him to leave the money for the school district to keep expanding and adding new programs. Throughout his career Powell has always been regarded as a giving man and with this final act of kindness he has sealed his legacy of kindness by giving the school district their largest contribution ever.

Ohio Man Pledges to Give Lottery Money to Help Charities-- Credit: msnbc.com
Earlier this week Philip Withem of Logan Ohio won $5 million in an Ohio lottery second chance prize drawing and shortly after claiming his prize he announced what he plans to do with at least part of the money. Withem announced that he was grateful for the prize but that he would also be doing his part for society by giving away a portion of his winnings.
Withem said that his reasoning for donating to charity is that he has received so much help in the past he feels it is only right for him to give back now that he has the opportunity. Withem has spent much of his life on kidney dialysis and has reportedly been helped by many friends and charitable organizations. These are presumably the groups Withem will be donating to primarily in order to repay everything he can.
According to Withem’s close friends and family he has always been a very charitable person; before he became ill he used to work at a variety of food centers and shelters. It comes as no surprise to many that he is willing to give back so much to his local charities after being blessed with such an amazing prize. The friends that WIthem decided to help out have also expressed their gratitude for his generosity; it is an amazing thing to see a man donate so much money to friends and charities that were in dire need of some help.

Family Finds $45000 and Returns It
Earlier this week the Ferrin family purchased their first home in Salt Lake City and during Josh Ferrin’s first walk through the new home something miraculous happened. According to Josh something out of place caught his eye in the garage and after a short investigation something very valuable was found.
What Josh discovered was a WWII ammo tin which contained a large sum of money. Of course being that he had just purchased the home Josh continued to investigate what he was finding and in the process he found a few other bags containing even more money.
Eventually Josh managed to recover all of the cash which came to a total of $45,000. Josh said he immediately reacted and called members of his family for advice on what to do; he decided that locking the money safely in his car was probably the best thing to do for the time being.
After a few days of counting the money and finding out who it belonged to Josh Ferrin called the son of the man who previously owned the home. Josh said that at first he was not sure what to do with the money but after a few days thinking about it he realized that returning the money to the owner was the only thing he could do. Shortly thereafter Josh met with the previous owner’s son and transferred the $45,000 in cash to him. The story touched many hearts and according to Ferrin it will be used as a lesson to teach his young children the concept of honesty.
