Student Wins $40,000 Scholarship; Gives to Teammates

Allan Guei is an 18 year old basketball player who has been getting some serious attention thanks to his incredible heart this week. Guei was given the opportunity to compete in a free throw competition which would determine the winner of a large college scholarship and he won thanks to his shooting ability; the real surprise however was what he has decided to do with the scholarship.

Under current rules Guei was allowed to keep the 40,000 dollar scholarship as well as any other scholarships he had earned but he decided that he was not going to do that. Guei announced shortly after winning the massive scholarship that he would be giving it in part to other competitors in the competition. Guei said in an interview that because he had already received a full ride scholarship from his school of choice there was no need for him to waste the scholarship, that is why he announced at his school’s graduation ceremony that he would be giving the money to his teammates that had competed.

Each of the 7 other competitors will be receiving an equal cut from the 40,000 dollars to pay for schooling at a college of their choice. Guei really shocked his school with the announcement that he would be giving back and his unbelievable kindness has not gone unnoticed as it is now gaining worldwide attention; few people are as compassionate as he is so it is nice to see a young man give back like this.

NBA Player Auctioning Ring for Charity

NBA Player Auctioning Ring for Charity

NBA Player Auctioning Ring for Charity

This week one very generous NBA player announced that he will be auctioning the ring he won during the 2004 NBA championship. The proceeds from the auction will then go to a charity devoted to raising awareness and money for children dealing with a terminal illness called Batten’s Disease. Batten’s disease affects mainly children and through the years it progresses from minor seizures to blindness and eventually death.

Darko Milicic is the player behind the auction and he has quite a history of being generous when it comes to children’s health. Milicic and his wife first became familiar with Batten’s Disease when they read about a family that was affected by it in his home country of Serbia. Without any hesitation Milicic quickly stepped in and paid for the expensive treatment for the family.

Currently there isn’t much that can be done to fight the disease in many cases; the most popular form of treatment is stem cell treatment that is only available in China. Milicic and the charity he is helping are hoping to raise enough money and enough awareness to someday offer some sort of treatment here in the United States.

The ring auction is not the only money Milicic will be donating to the charity either. Milicic will be hosting a group of parties and NBA events which will donate all proceeds to the charity. Milicic is hoping that some of his NBA friends and teammates will step in and help raise funds for the charity as well, though at this time nothing has been announced.

Crowd Helps 13 Yr Old Sing National Anthem

Crowd Aides Girl In National Anthem

When Natalie Gilbert, 13, started singing the National Anthem at a basketball game between the Trail Blazers and the Dallas Mavericks she got nervous and the words wouldn’t come to her. That day the crowd wasn’t going to let her be embarrassed.

First, the Blazer’s coach came to her aid. He started singing with her, and then suddenly the whole audience joined in to help. Everyone sang loud and proud and at the end, Gilbert and the coach got a standing ovation. It was a day that no one at the game was likely to forget.

It turns out that Gilbert was just getting over the flu, and was feeling sick that day but wanted to sing anyway. The coach said he saw her fumble with the words and noticed she didn’t look very good, and just wanted to help her so she wouldn’t have a bad day.

“She looked so sad and helpless,” he said. “I just wanted to do something and just decided to sing along. I am glad I could help her.” The coach added that it was a special moment for him and he was glad he was there in the little girl’s hour of need.

The day could have been lost, but thanks to a considerate and friendly coach, and an audience who didn’t want a 13 year old girl to be embarrassed, the day turned out instead to be a refreshing and good day for everyone in attendance at the basketball game.
