Kevin McGuire, cancer patient and Taylor Swift's escort to the CMA Awards.
What 18-year-old male wouldn’t want to take the beautiful and talented music star out on a date? When Taylor Swift learned about Kevin McGuire’s unusual request, she responded in a way that surprised the young man from Somerdale, New Jersey.
McGuire has been battling leukemia since he was 13 years old. He went into remission in 2010 but the cancer returned and he is once again in a fight for his life. Inspired by her younger brother’s courage and character, his sister Victoria began a Facebook campaign on his behalf. Her goal? To net her brother a date with the music star.
Victoria McGuire says Kevin remained true to who he is throughout treatment, never asking ‘Why me?’ He has played basketball throughout his high school years and even played varsity football during his freshman year. She sees him as the kindest, most noble 18 year old you might ever meet.
She knows nothing brightens Kevin’s mood more than Taylor Swift and believes he deserves a special event in his life. Victoria launched the campaign to get Taylor Swift to agree to be Kevin’s prom date and the Facebook page has garnered interest from more than 90,000 people.
The idea caught on and local media interviewed Victoria about her campaign. She told them Kevin felt no one would want to go to prom with him because he will look differently and be bald by then. So Victoria suggested trying to get the songstress to be his date.
With the attention the campaign was getting, it wasn’t long before Swift herself responded. She declined the offer to go to the prom but made a counter offer. Instead, Swift invited the young mad to be her date to the ACM Awards coming up in April.
McGuire saw Swift’s response while he was in bed at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and was stunned. He accepted on the provision that he was physically well enough to attend when the date arrived.
Though the teen is not old enough to gamble, something tells us his date at The Academy of Country Music Awards on April 1 in Las Vegas will leave him feeling like a real winner.
