Red Cross disaster assistance
Nancy Greer, a volunteer with the Red Cross spends most of her time helping out in disaster ravaged areas assisting the Shasta Area Chapter of the Red Cross. Last year alone, Nancy spent three full months in disaster ridden areas doing the good work of the Red Cross. Even if Nancy just wanted to be part time, the disasters will make the service almost full time.
The American Red Cross has been the leading emergency response organization in the United States. The Red Cross is part of the worldwide movement offering neutral humanitarian care to war victims and victims of natural disasters. Over the years, the Red Cross has taken on more and more services in an attempt to relieve and prevent suffering.
Nancy spent twenty five years working in law enforcement in California serving as a probation officer. She retired after her years of service and still wanted to fulfill that give back attitude to the community. Nancy volunteered for the Red Cross because she always believed in the work that they do. Having been in law enforcement for so many years, Nancy lived on the adrenaline and working in disaster areas seemed to be her calling.
Hurricane Ike that devastated Galveston and the Gulf began her service with the Red Cross. Nancy spent a month in Texas in 2008 battling the after effects of the storm. She was placed with the Welfare Inquiry section to try and get the victims of the story connected with other friends
The woman, a 94-year-old depressed grandmother has lived by herself in Galveston and was sent to San Antonio for shelter.
Because of her age and the extreme conditions of stress, the elderly woman could not remember the last name of her granddaughter, or where the girl lived. The lady was afraid that she was going to die alone in the shelter.
As fate would have it, the granddaughter was calling shelter after shelter trying to find her grandmother.
Nancy was able to connect the two people and she was fortunate to see the joy in her eyes and the smile on her face as life went from sadness to joy when the grandmother and granddaughter connected on the phone.
The elderly woman was immediately changed. She went from being secluded and lost in the disaster to someone that was full of joy after hearing the voice of someone she loved and that cared for her. The story is one of many such reunions Nancy witnessed, each one a remarkable testimony to the change we can have on others’ lives.

Young Soldier Receives Medal of Honor-- Source: Associated Press
Today Sergeant Dakota Meyer of Kentucky was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama. The Medal of Honor is a very special award that few men are lucky enough to receive; of course Meyer had his reason for receiving this prestigious metal. Meyer actually received the metal for his outstanding bravery while fighting but the surprising part is that he was actually violating direct orders while doing what he did.
Meyer received the medal because he was brave enough to directly enter a heavy fire fight rather than stay back and retain cover. Throughout the fight that lasted hours Meyer repeatedly entered the areas of heaviest fire in order to assist his fellow soldiers in need. Throughout the fight he managed to rescue 12 men that were essentially pinned down. He also managed to single handedly free a path for 24 more American soldiers to escape from the massive ambush.
Despite all of the heroic efforts Meyer still maintained his position that he is not a hero in any way. He, like most soldiers, say he was simply doing what was necessary in order to protect his men. Because of this Meyer was in fact very worth of the incredibly prestigious Medal of Honor which he was personally awarded by President Obama this morning. Meyer will forever be recorded as an outstanding soldier and an American hero, regardless of how modest he will forever be.

Man Jumps Into Moving Jeep to Rescue Driver-- Source: Associated Press
This week a man in Atlanta is making headlines for his incredible act of bravery and skill when he took command of an out of control situation. The act of heroism was shocking not only to bystanders but to police and officials as well; Michael Perry heroically jumped into a moving Jeep in order to take control from the driver that had blacked out. In the process Perry risked his life to save a stranger and it paid off in the end.
The Jeep’s driver, Christopher Sanders, apparently blacked out after having a random seizure while driving home from work. Fortunately Perry was nearby and was quick enough to park his car and catch up to the moving vehicle in order to apply the brake and save the man from imminent danger.
Those who first reported to the scene say it was an absolute miracle that Perry was able to dive into the moving vehicle and stop it before it made impact with a guardrail. Perry was slightly injured in the heroic move but he says it was absolutely worth it to potentially save another man’s life. In the end Perry says he is glad he took the risk he did as Sanders was definitely very appreciative of his efforts. Sanders is undergoing further medical evaluation but doctors say he will be fine as he suffered no actual injuries from the entire incident; no word on what caused the seizures either at this point.

New Mexico Man Rewarded After Saving Girl Source:NYDailyNews
Antonio Diaz Chacon made news headlines this week when he chased down a kidnapper and rescued the girl he had kidnapped. Today Chacon is in the news once again as his good deed is being rewarded by dozens of strangers who didn’t even know him.
According to officials Chacon has received hundreds of emails, phone calls, and letters in the mail asking if they can give him gift cards, cash, and other donations. So many people were so surprised by his brave effort to save the 6 year old girl that they are trying to reach out and reward him for his good deed. Chacon insists that he was simply in the right place at the right time and that he is not really a hero; thousands of parents in the area disagree and claim he is in fact a hero for his actions.
The fact that so many people are willing to reach out and reward Chacon for his actions are showing people that there are still plenty of good people out there. At this time Chacon has not said if he is accepting or even wanting any of the rewards, he has simply said that he was just doing the right thing by chasing down the kidnapper and rescuing the young girl. It is not every day that the general public offers a reward like this to someone so it is quite clear that there are still plenty of good people in the world that are willing to reward someone for their good deeds.

A Pit bull named Diamond will be honored Wednesday by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Las Angeles. She will be presented with the 29th Annual National Hero Dog award for saving her family from certain death in a fire in October.
Darryl Steen and his two daughters were asleep when the fire broke out and would have died of smoke inhalation if Diamond hadn’t started barking.
Steen was able to drop his 9-year old daughter from a 2nd story window to safety but he couldn’t find his 16-year old. She was hiding under a mattress in her room and had passed out from the smoke. Diamond stood over her until she was rescued refusing to leave her side.
Steen and 16-year Sierra both had to stay in the hospital for weeks and have skin grafts. Diamond was sent to a pet hospital where she spent 6 weeks being treated for burns and smoke inhalation.
People have been generous with donating money to the Steens and they hope that as soon as Steen is cleared to go back to work they can get their own place again. The 15-month old Diamond had been with the family for about a year when the fire broke out. She certainly has proved her loyalty.
Diamond is staying in one place while the Steens stay with relatives. The Steen’s are determined to find an apartment where they can have their dog. If it wasn’t for Diamond none of them would be alive.

9 Year Old Hero to get a New Leg
The little girl who became a hero in March will be able to return to some semblance of normalcy if these Southern businesses and athletes have anything to say about it. They are banding together to get Anaiah Rucker a new leg.
Anaiah almost died in February when she pushed her sister out of the way of an oncoming truck. They were walking to the bus stop and her little sister was almost hit in the rain. She has been lauded as a hero but says that she had to do it. Her sister was too little to die and she would have been really hurt if the truck had hit her.
Anaiah saved her sisters life but almost lost her own in the process. She lost a kidney, lost her leg and broke her neck in the accident. She is a very courageous little girl and everyone loves her.
Megan Landon is the high school track coach and president for Langdon Athletics a sporting goods store in Greensboro Ga. When she heard about little Anaiah’s leg and heroism she automatically wanted to help her.
To do that she got in touch with pro wrestler and Olympic shot-putter Steve “The Freak” Chamberland. Steve lives in Florida and lost his leg in 1999 in a motorcycle accident. Ever since then he has tried to help people who could not afford to get a prosthetic.
When he heard about Anaiah he contacted Clearwater Brace and Limb in Florida. They had made his artificial leg. They agreed to make a prosthetic and donate it to Anaiah. The prosthetic will be worth 30,000 dollars.

Man Saves Both Unconcious Man and His Dog
When 76 year old Bernard Smith took a walk that day, he didn’t expect to end the day by helping an unconscious man and having a dog to take care of. But that is exactly what happened this week.
Smith found the man near the Cattle Mark car park in Kingston lying on the ground unconscious with the dog tied to a railing close by. Smith, who is a war veteran and a former RAF engineer, then proceeded to contact the authorities and make sure the man was taken to the hospital.
Instead of letting the man’s dog go to the animal shelter, he volunteered to take it home and care for it until the man recovered.
“I knew the man would be taken care of at the hospital,” said Smith. “But who was going to take care of the dog?”
While the hurt man recovered, Smith and his wife Ann took care of the dog and ultimately discovered the dog had a chip and that it belonged to yet another man other than the injured one at the hospital. It turned out that the injured man had collapsed while take the dog for a walk for a friend.
The owners of the dog were very happy to get their dog back and had wondered what had happened. Smith says he will miss Lena, as it turns out the dog is called, but he is happy to have the whole strange story come to a nice ending. The man in the hospital will also recover.

Four Year Old Insires Everyone He Meets
Four year old Ezra Frech loves basket ball. He likes to follow his favorite team, which is the Los Angeles Lakers on the TV. He loves basketball so much he plays it as much as he can both indoors and outdoors.
What’s the big deal? Frech, who lives in California, only has one leg, plus his left arm also didn’t form properly because he was born with a rare disease that causes problems with the limbs. His left leg was also unusable, so was amputated and he was fitted with a prosthetic leg.
His parents say that Frech is a happy kid, and his love of basketball and his seemingly uncaring attitude about his disability is an inspiration to everyone in the neighborhood. Frech just puts on the prosthetic leg and plays basketball and other games to his heart’s content.
ABC News heard about Frech and his love of basketball and decided to reward the boy for his cheerful spirit and love of the Los Angeles Lakers. They decided to put together a meeting between Frech and his favorite player, Pau Gasol. The meeting was videoed and shown on the local news.
Frech’s parents and everyone who sees the child can’t help but comment on his happy go lucky spirit, his dogged determination, and his willingness to keep on going no matter what life brings him
“He’s such an inspiration for us all,” said his mother. “He’s a sweet boy and he makes us all more willing to accept the differences in other people.”
