E-Cigarette Industry To be Regulated Soon

E-Cigarette Industry To be Regulated Soon

E-Cigarette Industry To be Regulated Soon

This week a significant congressional report was released regarding the now booming electronic cigarette industry. At this point electronic cigarettes are essentially unregulated and many health experts have been questioning this for quite some time. The good news is that today the congressional report, along with the world health organization, announced that they have decided to begin pursuing regulation.

Under current rules there are basically no restrictions on sales or marketing of the popular devices, which is partly why they have become so popular with younger users. Based on this week’s report many experts are incredibly hopeful that regulation will help keep the electronic cigarettes away from children. Essentially the congressional report hopes to force the electronic cigarette industry to follow the same regulation as traditional tobacco products. It might be a while before any real rules are set in stone but it is only a matter of time at this point.

This is definitely good news for everyone, because the electronic cigarette has gotten so popular in such a short time. Many medical experts have expressed concern over safety and health risks and this regulation is a step in the right direction for making the entire situation at least a little bit better.

Drugstore Decides to Stop Selling Tobacco

Today CVS, one of the largest drugstore chains, announced that soon they will no longer be carrying tobacco or tobacco products. The announcement came as part of their new push for healthier decisions and overall wellness of their customers and as you can imagine it generated lots of reactions today. Obviously there are lots of reason for a decision like this but as a whole it is being considered an absolutely brilliant step forward and will likely be good news for society and the company.

Smoking and tobacco are becoming more and more of an outcast of society due to various health issues, despite this nearly every large chain store has continued to sell the product. CVS is the first big company to step up and fight against tobacco by stopping sales and many experts are hopeful that this will eventually spread to other major store as well. Either way it is great news to see a large corporation fighting against smoking and tobacco in the strongest way possible. CVS will officially pull tobacco out of their stores nationwide by October 1st, only time will tell if it makes any impact or whether any other companies decide to follow suit.

Quitting Smoking is Beneficial to Infants

Quitting Smoking is Beneficial to Infants

A study released this week confirms some information that many doctors have believed for many years. It has been well known that smoking while pregnant is bad for the baby but very few studies have actually been conducted to determine exactly how bad it is. The study released this week has some pretty good news for mothers that smoke because it showed a link between quitting and the child’s health when born.

Obviously smoking at all while pregnant is bad but doctors have now concluded that even if a woman smokes through part of her pregnancy it is incredibly beneficial to stop part way. This is great news because often many women do not necessarily quit smoking as soon as they become pregnant and many doctors used to believe that the effects were almost immediate. Even halfway through a pregnancy if the woman stops smoking it will have some significant benefits to the baby according to doctors which is absolutely great news. Of course doctors are still recommending that women stop smoking before getting pregnant or as soon as they become pregnant but at least this is good news for mothers that did not quit immediately.

New Stop Smoking Campaign Successful

New Stop Smoking Campaign Successful

This week a study released shows some very good news about a potential new campaign to stop smoking. This time the campaign is aimed directly at youth smokers, specifically teenagers and high school students. According to the study, exercising is a highly effective way to get these students to stop smoking.

The theory behind the study was that the nicotine in a cigarette creates a physical buzz that the kids enjoy. Because the students had been smoking for a year or less in most cases they had not become addicted to the nicotine directly but rather the buzz it provided. Heavy exercise was enough to provide that same buzz to the smokers and remove the need for nicotine or smoking.

Obviously this is still just a preliminary study but researchers say it is absolutely great news for smokers worldwide. This could easily be developed into a nicotine and exercise based stop smoking plan that may become the most successful stop smoking system ever. No word on when a follow up study will be conducted but doctors and researchers are hopeful that this will lead to something major. This is absolutely great news for anyone that has ever seriously struggled with stopping a major smoking habit.

Zookeepers Working to Help Orangutan Stop Smoking

Zookeepers Working to Help Orangutan Stop Smoking. Source:AP

Tori is by far one of the best known primates around the world due to her terrible habit of smoking cigarettes but now, approximately 10 years after she started this bad habit, Tori is finally going to kick it. Tori has been smoking for almost 10 years as zoo visitors would throw cigarette butts and eventually entire cigarettes into the habitat where she lives.

Now that Tori is getting older the zookeepers are finally going to help her kick the habit, although they’re not exactly sure how successful they will be. By moving Tori to a secluded island habitat the zookeepers are hopeful that Tori will completely forget her desire to smoke and once again become a healthy and lively primate.

It is not terribly uncommon for orangutans in zoos to start smoking when given the opportunity, but many are hopeful that this type of environment change might make Tori kick the habit. This is truly an incredible endeavor to undertake and will definitely be watched by millions around the world. Hopefully someday the world famous smoking orangutan will stop smoking for good and be able to live a healthy and happy life. It may hurt the number of visitors to the zoo according to some analysts, but zookeepers say that the lives of their animals are significantly more important.

Small Student Club Leads the Fight Against Smoking

Small Student Club Leads the Fight Against Smoking

The tobacco industry and anti smoking movements have been fighting for decades in the United States about what should and shouldn’t be allowed and today it seems a new group has gotten involved. Unlike many other anti tobacco and anti smoking groups this one is not made up of wealthy lawyers or high dollar companies but rather a group of kids in high school.

A small high school in Montana is home to the group leading the fight against smoking and while they’re small, they are hopeful that they will be able to do something. The group is setting out to inform classmates and their peers about the dangers and health risks of smoking and hopefully help reduce the number of kids their age that start smoking.

This group is beginning to get national attention as they begin to spread to other schools and other districts by spreading their anti smoking awareness days. The so called “Great American Smokeout” is the project they’re spearheading right now and the overall purpose is simply to educate but at the same time students say that they’re trying to help students stop smoking as well.

Smoking among high school students is becoming a bigger problem now than it was in the past so these sort of movements are becoming more and more common. It is not entirely known at this point whether or not these small groups will begin to make a difference but analysts say it will likely have a significant impact.

U.S. Smoking Rates Falling Consistently

U.S. Smoking Rates Falling Consistently

A government research report released today indicates that many anti smoking campaigns being put out around the country are successfully reducing the amount of smokers all across the United States. According to the report only 19% of all adults smoke nationwide which while it is still a substantial percentage it is nowhere near as high as it has been historically. Even in 2009 the percentage was slightly over 21% so there has been a reduction of at least 2% in just the past year and a half.

According to the CDC however this decline was still not enough. The number of smokers has been steadily declining for quite some time and the 2% decline simply wasn’t enough. Of course the CDC is also still happy to report the decline as it means more and more Americans are on the track to healthier living by eliminating tobacco and smoking from their lives.

For now health experts are happy to see the continuing decline of smoking all across the country; more and more anti smoking campaigns are being produced all the time now so these groups are definitely happy to see some success. Of course the health benefit is the biggest gain from the reduction in smoking rates as it means there will likely be fewer medical complications associated with smoking in the next few decades; no word on what is projected to happy with smoking rates in the coming years though continued decline is definitely expected.

New York City Implements Smoking Ban

New York City Implements Smoking Ban

This week the city of New York made a significant stride in the effort to reduce smoking by officially implementing a city wide ban on smoking in public places. Previously citizens were allowed to smoke in basically any city or state owned area including parks and other similar areas but as of today much of that is being put to a stop.

New York, like many cities, decided to implement a widespread smoking ban for a variety of reasons with health being the forerunner. The city has been working for the past few years to reduce smoking in many areas in order to encourage residents to quit and this is just another step in that direction.

Of course the public smoking ban is not as widespread as many had originally hoped it would be. Originally proponents of the idea hoped that the city would be able to ban smoking on city sidewalks and streets but unfortunately the smoking ban was not targeted at these areas and as a result smoking will still be allowed on sidewalks.

Health experts say this type of citywide ban should make a significant health difference. By banning smoking in public areas millions of people will not be affected by second hand smoke and thousands may even be forced to quit smoking all together. In the end it is a step in the right direction from New York City; many other cities in the United States are expected to pass a similar smoking ban as well.
