Fish Oil Linked to Brain Health

Fish Oil Linked to Brain Health

Fish Oil Linked to Brain Health

For years now people have been saying that various fish oils are beneficial or healthy for some reason or another. Just this week yet another medical study came out that indicates that certain fish oils are actually even more beneficial than previously expected. In particular the study was focusing on Omega-3 oils and the study showed that consuming the oil regularly can significantly help slow brain aging in patients.

This is absolutely great news because it not only helps keep the brain a little bit younger, it also helps prevent the onset of problems like Alzheimer’s in older patients. Doctors are still studying the findings further but at this point they’re happy to report that there is absolutely a pretty solid link between the oil and the results. The exact amount of Omega-3 oil required to be beneficial is still undetermined but the study is planning to be continued so that doctors can really pinpoint the benefit point. At this time doctors are continuing to recommend Omega-3 oils for patients and they’ll likely continue to do so long after the new findings come out.

This is absolutely another sign of medical advancement that is great news. Only time will tell just how many other benefits Omega-3 oils have but this is definitely a big one.

Scientists Reach Alzheimer’s Breakthrough

Scientists Reach Alzheimer's Breakthrough

This week a group of British medical researchers released a study that shows some very promising advances in terms of neurological diseases, in particular it was targeting Alzheimer’s. Essentially the study showed very dramatic results from a radical new treatment idea that was tested on mice in order to potential prevent the advancement of these diseases.

The test was conducted on lab mice, as many preliminary studies are, but doctors are incredibly hopeful that this will be viable for humans too. The group of mice that received the preliminary treatment was essentially immune to the disease that was introduced to them, the disease in question very closely mimics Alzheimer’s so this is very promising according to the researchers involved. Multiple follow-up studies and retrials are expected but overall the news is definitely very good. It is only a matter of time before a treatment like this leads to major success in treating people and many doctors are very hopeful that this is just such a breakthrough. No word yet on if or when it’ll be tested on humans but the end goal is to reach that point and potential create a vaccine of some sort against neurological diseases.

Brain Implant May Help Alzheimer’s Patients

Brain Implant May Help Alzheimer's Patients

Alzheimer’s is one of the many ailments that are relatively unknown to the medical world; despite millions of dollars being spent on research there haven’t been any truly major breakthroughs in a long time, at least until now. This week a medical report released shows that there might be a very promising new treatment available for Alzheimer’s patients in the near future, and it comes in the form of an implant.

The new Alzheimer’s implant is still in development and testing but preliminary reports are looking very promising. The implant was designed around a heart pacemaker and doctors say that it functions very similarly as well. Basically the implant will continue to stimulate the patient’s brain in a number of locations with various inputs that are apparently able to significantly reduce the affects of Alzheimer’s disease on the brain.

This is great news because it might be the biggest treatment breakthrough ever for Alzheimer’s patients. Doctors are working rapidly to begin more in dept testing so that hopefully soon they will be able to release this treatment and control system to the public. For the millions of people that suffer from Alzheimer’s this could be the greatest medical advancement of all time.

Researchers Discover Alzheimer’s Detection Method

Researchers Discover Alzheimer's Detection Method

Alzheimer’s disease has been affecting millions of people every single year and unfortunately there haven’t been many major breakthroughs in terms of treating, diagnosing, or preventing the disease in the past. This week, however, that has changed as a group of medical researchers announced that they may have found what will be the best test for Alzheimer’s in patients.

The studies conducted were focused primarily on brain activity and neurological effects and much to their surprise the researchers found that there are certain traits shown in the brain that eventually lead to Alzheimer’s. This is a major breakthrough because it will make it possible for doctors and neurologists to begin testing for Alzheimer’s in patients well before the onset of symptoms, making treatment much simpler.

This is great news because it means there may finally be a way to diagnose and subsequently prevent Alzheimer’s. It is not a guarantee unfortunately, but doctors say that this link is absolutely enough to at least form a basis for testing and treatment. In the future this discover will then be used to create much more in dept testing and prevention methods that would never have been created without these early detection signs. A follow up study is being conducted to see just how strongly these signals are actually linked to the development of Alzheimer’s in patients.

Alzheimer’s Funding Increase Coming

Alzheimer's Funding Increase Coming

Yesterday we reported on what could have been one of the biggest advancements in Alzheimer’s research in recent years and today we have a follow up to the story. Government officials announced today that, given a variety of factors, multiple Alzheimer’s research facilities would begin to receive significant funding increases in the coming months. This is absolutely great news for everyone because additional funding almost always means an increase in possible or probable treatments for various illnesses.

Alzheimer’s is currently fairly well funding, but many analysts say that the additional $50 million will help an unbelievable amount. The influx of cash should, and will help researchers continue with projects that they were expecting to end and if just one of those projects turns out to be successful it will have been a worthwhile investment from the government funding projects. Not only are these Alzheimer’s research facitilies receiving additional funding for 2012 research projects, they have also been promised significant increases in funding in 2013 as well. The combined funding increase will likely bring plenty of successful tests and experiments to the industry which should help the consumer market substantially. This is absolutely great news as it might finally bring an end to one of the least understood and most painful sicknesses running rampant right now. The various research groups have not commented on the funding though we assume that they are surely quite excited about the addition of so much money.

Researchers Find Possible Alzheimer’s Drug

Researchers Find Possible Alzheimer's Drug

Alzheimer’s affects millions of people each year and for a number of reasons it is incredibly crippling. The effects of Alzheimer’s vary from patient to patient and as a result many doctors have trouble effectively treating them, fortunately new research shows that there might be hope after all. Bexarotene is a new drug being developed specifically for Alzheimer’s patients and while it is not being used or tested on humans yet it is proving to be a very promising drug. The drug is currently being tested on mice and the most recent release indicates that it is working even better than previously expected.

Bexarotene itself is actually already approved for use in humans but for a number of reasons it rarely is used. Doctors have now begun to see that, when used properly and in the right dosage it can be incredibly effective. Researchers say that the drug had a nearly immediate impact on the mice they were testing on and after just a short period they showed significant and permanent improvement. If these findings carry over to humans it will be great news for millions of people. Multiple follow up and progressive studies are being conducted in order to determine whether or not the drug is going to be as effective on people but for now doctors are hopeful. If the drug continues to perform this well it will be great news for everyone as it is yet another significant advancement in medical capabilities.

Staying Sharp Helps Prevent Alzheimer’s

Staying Sharp Helps Prevent Alzheimer's

Preventing or reducing Alzheimer’s effect on patients has always been a medical issue that has puzzled doctors for decades and today a medical study has proven one possible activity that will reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s in patients or even help prevent the problem.

Apparently, according to the study, Alzheimer’s and its effects can be prevented or reduced by keeping mentally active and sharp. This can be accomplished through puzzles, games, mind tricks, and anything else that requires constant and complex though as it helps keep the brain sharp and alive. The study also shows that people who were incredibly mentally active as young children and adults are significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer’s in their old age

Both of these findings are great news as it means a reduction in the number of cases of a very troubling disease. Obviously this is far from a prevention or cure for the problem but doctors and researchers are always happy to have found any sort of link to a medicine or activity that reduced or eliminates a problem especially when it is something as significant as Alzheimer’s. Doctors have been telling seniors to stay mentally active for years and now it looks like staying mentally active is actually beneficial to anyone and everyone regardless of age so now is the time to get started so that hopefully down the line you can spare yourself the agony of a disease as awful as Alzheimer’s.

Nasal Insulin Shows Promise For Alzheimer’s Symptoms

Insulin Treatment

A small pilot study was performed at the University of Washington in Seattle that looked at people with early onset Alzheimer’s. The results showed that insulin administered through the nasal passage might provide some relief from the disease. In an encouraging trial, 100 people with recent onset Alzheimer’s were tested using a blind study. One group was given the insulin spray every day for around four months and the control group did not receive the hormone. The patients that that received the hormone showed improvement in both memory and brain function.

Insulin is a hormone that is responsible for the metabolism of sugar in our bodies. The breakdown of food into sugar is responsible for our energy levels. Studies have shown that people with impaired brain function such as is exhibited in Alzheimer’s dementia also suffer from abnormal glucose function as well. The theory is that the disease actually prevents the insulin from acting on the glucose properly and inhibiting the proper amount into the brain causing the cognitive issues.

Nasal Insulin is not yet ready for patient use as symptom relief or as a cure for Alzheimer’s sufferers. There are a few things that have to occur before inhaled insulin becomes standardized treatment. Insulin is an extremely potent hormone that regulates the blood sugar levels for the body. If a patient does not suffer from increased blood glucose levels, the result of extra insulin in the body can result in dangerously low blood sugar levels which can have serious consequences. Alzheimer’s disease is a complex process that involves more than just impaired glucose function. Alzheimer’s is affected by heredity, brain trauma, multiple concussions, high blood pressure, obesity and the list goes on.

Science has to determine how to capitalize on the evidence of the connection between Alzheimer’s and impaired glucose function. Physicians are going to have to continue to study the interaction between cognitive function, Alzheimer’s and the ability of the body’s insulin to process glucose properly. Once the processes have been studied and the negative effects insulin can have on a non-diabetic person are fully realized, then testing can be performed. Understanding by the scientific community of the relationship between the actions of nasal insulin on the cognitive function in Alzheimer’s patients is good news that progress towards a cure is being made.
