Amidst the growing concerns about the spread of the Ebola virus, a company in Japan is offering what could be the solution. A drug that has been widely used in Japan against the flu is also being used as an experimental Ebola treatment, and apparently it is expected to do a good job. Given the fatality rate of Ebola it comes as no surprise that doctors want to try anything they can to treat it.
The World Health Organization is hopeful that this drug will work against Ebola, but they say they’re not putting all their eggs in this one basket. If it does in fact work against Ebola it will only be a matter of time before it can be distributed as needed. In addition to experimental trials the company behind the product is also working to have it clinically tested and approved for human use against Ebola, so that in the future it can actually be used as a full force drug.
Whether or not this drug will work is yet to be seen, but many experts are hopeful that it might work. At this point any sign of hope is a good thing and doctors say this is the most promising step in the past few months. Experimental treatments are beginning soon so it is only a matter of time before we know if it is actually going to work.

Girl From Texas Becomes Princess for a Day
This week, 5 year old Claire Lankford from Texas saw her biggest dream come true thanks to support from her entire community. Lankford has a rare form of cancer that is difficult to treat and has a relatively survival rate, despite that she has a very positive and upbeat attitude according to doctors and her parents. Fortunately today she got another big boost to her attitude by becoming a princess for the day, and the entire community came out to support her.
Lankford was dressed in her favorite princess gown and the street was lined with boys and girls that came out to dress up as well. The entire community cheered and applauded for her as she rode through town on her very own horse drawn carriage. Lankford’s mother was overwhelmed with emotions and made it clear just how happy she was to see this kind of support for her daughter. This is definitely a very heartwarming story that shows just how much of an impact a small community can have when they get together to support one of their own. Lankford’s cancer treatment is still ongoing, but she is happy knowing that today she was very much a real princess.

Vitamin C Helps Fight Cancer
Chemotherapy is currently the most commonly used cancer fighting medicine on the market. Unfortunately there are a number of side effects and problems that make it less than appealing but there isn’t much most doctors can do beside us it on their cancer patients. Fortunately this week a study shows that one very simple vitamin can have a significant impact on the effectiveness and can essentially reduce the length of treatment required.
The biggest problem with chemotherapy is that it can and does kill cells that are not cancerous, fortunately according to the study vitamin C helps the treatment specifically target bad cancer cells. Doctors are incredibly happy with the results showing that vitamin C treatments helped and are planning to begin using it as a standard part of the treatment in many cases. More studies are being conducted to determine exactly why vitamin C does what it does, they’re also working to determine whether or not any other vitamins could be just as effective.
As a whole this is great news and will likely revolutionize the cancer treatment industry. Multiple follow up studies are being conducted and will likely yield even more positive results.

Scientists Reach Alzheimer's Breakthrough
This week a group of British medical researchers released a study that shows some very promising advances in terms of neurological diseases, in particular it was targeting Alzheimer’s. Essentially the study showed very dramatic results from a radical new treatment idea that was tested on mice in order to potential prevent the advancement of these diseases.
The test was conducted on lab mice, as many preliminary studies are, but doctors are incredibly hopeful that this will be viable for humans too. The group of mice that received the preliminary treatment was essentially immune to the disease that was introduced to them, the disease in question very closely mimics Alzheimer’s so this is very promising according to the researchers involved. Multiple follow-up studies and retrials are expected but overall the news is definitely very good. It is only a matter of time before a treatment like this leads to major success in treating people and many doctors are very hopeful that this is just such a breakthrough. No word yet on if or when it’ll be tested on humans but the end goal is to reach that point and potential create a vaccine of some sort against neurological diseases.

Worldwide AIDS Program A Success
AIDS has been one of the leading medical crusades for many years and part of that program has been education and research. According to a UN report released this week, the entire program has actually been very successful since 2001 as the number of AIDS infections has fallen by over 50% in just over 10 years. This is a huge step in the right direction and is absolutely great news, plus doctors are incredibly hopeful that this will continue for years to come.
Not only is the number of new AIDS infections down dramatically, the amount of AIDS related deaths has also dropped by 30% in the same time period. Both of these statistics are absolutely fantastic news and everyone around the world is celebrating the success of various education and treatment programs that have become common around the world. The UN is planning to continue with their current AIDS related efforts as well as adding multiple new programs for countries that need additional help, overall they are hopeful that the next decade will be even more effective. While a medical breakthrough to cure or prevent AIDS has not yet been achieved this is absolutely the biggest step in the right direction ever regarding AIDS.

FDA Hopeful Regarding Radical Breast Cancer Drug
Breast cancer is one of the leading killers in much of the world, it is also the cancer that generally received the most research funding and as such doctors are hopeful there will be a treatment available soon. Well an FDA announcement this week definitely shows that some very positive progress has been made in that regard. According to the FDA, multiple patients that have been given a new drug in a trial run have shown very promising results.
This is absolutely amazing news because it is really the only step towards a successful treatment in the recent future. The drug was designed to be used as a treatment prior to surgery, making it the least invasive option and the results according to doctors were phenomenal. In the multiple trial patients across the United States the new drug was used prior to any type of surgery and it was found that the drug reduced tumor size by a noticeable amount. This is a big accomplishment according to doctors because it greatly reduces to damage when surgery is needed, plus it helps the body recover faster.
At this point the drug is obviously still experimental but doctors are hopeful that this FDA study will lead to more treatments soon. Many doctors are hopeful that a larger study will be conducted sometime this year.

Drug Trial Increases Lung Cancer Survival
This week a study conducted on a newly developed lung cancer treatment was released and doctors as well as researchers are incredibly happy with the results they are seeing. The treatment was developed by the Eli Lilly Company and while it is still likely to be at least a few years before we see public availability doctors are very hopeful that this will in fact soon become a viable treatment method.
The final results of the study showed approximately a 40% increase in survival rate for patients compared to the national average, obviously this isn’t a perfect scenario but as always doctors are working to make things better and better. Lung cancer is a significant killer in America and around the world and the fact that this new treatment might one day become the key to fighting it effectively is absolutely great news.
Medical breakthroughs like this are always good news and doctors are really quite hopeful that this will become a viable treatment in the very near future. It is only a matter of time before this is improved to the point that it is substantially more effective and will become the standard treatment for anyone and everyone that is suffering from lung cancer.

Sugar Can Improve Cancer Detection
A medical report released this week has some revolutionary and surprising information that can significantly increase the chances of detecting cancer in some cases. According to the research, patients consuming sugar shortly before going through an MRI screening for cancer can drastically improve the detection rate. Doctors say that the idea is really quite simple, the way sugar reacts in the body is easy to see with an MRI so doctors are basically able to follow it as the sugar spreads through a person.
The way this helps detect cancer is that the cancerous cells react in a unique way when sugar is encountered and this can once again be spotted on an MRI. Overall doctors say that this new screening method is incredibly simple to implement and to understand, plus they’re already working on better ways to improve it. In the future many doctors are planning to give patients a simple injection with a sugar based material and then with an MRI they will be able to quickly and easily detect anything that may be cancerous. This is obviously great news because cancer detection is the only real way to treat it, hopefully in the future this will become a standard treatment procedure for many cancers.

Bone Marrow Treatment Essentially Cures HIV
This week doctors released a report that is sure to shock and amaze the world. According to the report, two men that have been treated with a radical new bone marrow transplant procedure have essentially been cured of HIV. Doctors did not give the men bone marrow treatment as part of their HIV treatment but rather as part of a cancer treatment program, the HIV cure was a simple side effect according to those involved.
Regardless of the fact that it came about as an accident, doctors are absolutely astonished that this has worked. The men both tested 100% negative for HIV after their treatment regime and both have successfully stopped taking any and all HIV medication. This is a very significant breakthrough in the AIDS/HIV research area and many doctors are hopeful that this may some day translate into a complete treatment and cure for HIV.
Obviously there is still a lot of research to be done before this becomes a true treatment, but doctors say they are incredibly excited about the possibility. Never before has such an effective link been proven between HIV and any sort of treatment or cure. Multiple organizations are beginning follow up studies and complete research programs to try and determine how this can be made into a true treatment for HIV which is absolutely great news.

Experts Predict Polio Will Be Eradicated Soon
Polio is one of the many diseases that affect people all around the world and today a group of top medical professionals announced a major plan to completely eradicate polio from the human population in as little as 5 years. The prediction is that the mission should be successful and polio will be a thing of the past by 2018 but it all depends on what sort of budget is provided for the eradication efforts.
Polio used to affect hundreds of thousands of people per year around the world but as medical research advanced it became easier and easier to treat or prevent polio outbreaks. A vaccine for polio has been available and common in much of the world for many years now as well but unfortunately there are still developing countries where polio vaccines are not common. Despite all of this the number of polio outbreaks hit a record low with only 223 last year. This is great news considering that just over 20 years ago the disease was incredibly widespread around most of the world.
Given enough funding experts say that the 2018 goal of eradication is very feasible. The plan is being proposed to the World Health Organization sometime soon and should be a big step forward for medicine all around the world.
